NIA Takes Over Manipur Violence Cases, Amit Shah Reviews Security Situation
Imphal: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation of three cases related to the ongoing violence in Manipur. The move comes after the Ministry of Home Affairs directed the central agency to probe the incidents that have led to loss of lives and widespread unrest in the state.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting today to review the security situation in Manipur. The meeting followed fresh outbreaks of violence in the state. Shah is scheduled to hold another detailed discussion with officials tomorrow at 12 PM.
The recent surge in violence was triggered by the discovery of six bodies, including three women and three children, in Jiribam district. The victims, who were residents of a relief camp, were allegedly abducted by Kuki militants. Protests erupted in the Valley districts, leading to widespread damage to property and attacks on the homes of several MLAs.
Earlier this month, militants attacked a police station in the Borobekra area, resulting in the deaths of 11 militants. During their retreat, they abducted six civilians from a relief camp.
Meanwhile, the political landscape in Manipur has also witnessed significant changes. The National People’s Party (NPP), a key ally of the BJP-led government, withdrew its support, citing the government’s failure to restore peace. However, the BJP-led coalition is expected to retain power, as it still commands a majority in the state assembly.
