NIMAS Team Successfully Ascends Unnamed Peak in Arunachal Pradesh, Now Named “Tsangyang Gyatso Peak”
Northeast Desk, 25th September: In a historic achievement, a team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) has successfully completed the first ascent of an unnamed 6,383-meter (20,942 feet) peak in the Gorichen range of Arunachal Pradesh. Located in the Tawang-West Kameng region, the peak has been named “Tsangyang Gyatso Peak” in honor of His Holiness the 6th Dalai Lama, Rigzen Tsangyang Gyatso, a figure of immense cultural and spiritual significance to the region.
The climb, marked by its technical difficulty, included overcoming steep ice walls, dangerous crevasses, and a glacier that presented serious challenges to the mountaineers. Despite unpredictable weather and hazardous conditions, the NIMAS team completed the ascent, adding a new chapter to India’s mountaineering accomplishments.
Beyond its adventure sport implications, the expedition also highlights the deep historical ties of the Dalai Lama to the Monpa community, paying tribute to his lasting influence. The Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) has been notified of the ascent, and efforts are underway to formalize the peak’s new name in official records.
This significant achievement is expected to bring global recognition to Arunachal Pradesh, solidifying its reputation as a growing hub for mountaineering and adventure tourism.
