Nine Militants Arrested in Manipur During Coordinated Crackdown on Extortion Networks

Imphal: Security forces in Manipur conducted a series of coordinated operations between July 21 and 23, 2025, leading to the arrest of nine active militants from various insurgent groups engaged in widespread extortion across the state.

The crackdown marks a major blow to extortion rackets that have been threatening businesses, educational institutions, and government departments, especially in the valley and border regions.

The most significant arrests occurred on July 23 when two active members of KCP (Taibanganba) were apprehended—Konjengbam Kanta Meitei (23) from Khuyathong in Imphal West and Sanatomba Aheibam (24) from Takyel Khongbal. The duo had been targeting schools and government offices. Rs 22,000 in extortion money, three mobile phones, and Rs 8,220 in cash were seized from them.

In another development the same day, security forces arrested Hidangmayum Naocha Sharma (35), a KCP (MC) cadre, for extorting local businesses in Bishnupur district.

Also apprehended was Sanabam Ibungo Meitei (27), a KCP (PWG) operative linked to extortion at oil pumps. Seven demand notes and a mobile phone were recovered from his possession, underscoring the organised nature of the operations.

Sorokhaibam Olen Meitei (18), a cadre of PREPAK PRO, was arrested from the Tabungkhok Sagei Brick Field area. Two mobile phones were found with him.

On July 22, forces made a breakthrough near the jungle stretch between Border Pillars 73(10) and 73(11) in Tengnoupal district, arresting two senior militants—Thingnam Amujao Singh (57) of PREPAK and Kangjam Motea Meitei (33) of PLA.

In another arrest that day, Waribam Ajoy Singh (25), a PLA/RPF cadre, was nabbed from the Langol area in Imphal West.

The operation series began on July 21 with the arrest of Boythong Khongsai (29), a UKNA cadre, from Sugnu–Chandel Road. He was found with a Royal Enfield motorcycle, mobile phone, SIM cards, and several ID documents.

Security officials stated that the operations were aimed at dismantling the extortion ecosystem that has been fuelling insurgency activities and undermining civil administration. Investigations are ongoing to trace the wider networks linked to the arrested individuals.
