NIT Manipur Faces Placement Challenges Amidst State Conflict

Imphal: The ongoing conflict in Manipur has cast a shadow over campus recruitment at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur, leading to a decline of 10-15%.

Dr. Johnson Singh, the Training and Placement Officer at NIT Manipur, acknowledged the impact of the unrest on recruitment efforts.

While some companies have hesitated to visit the state for physical placement drives, virtual recruitment has continued since August. “Due to the perception of widespread turmoil, certain companies are apprehensive about conducting on-campus placements,” Dr. Singh explained.

Addressing exaggerated reports of a 40% drop in placements, Dr. Singh clarified that the actual decline is significantly lower. He revealed that 40 companies have already confirmed their participation in the 2024-25 recruitment process, conducted virtually. So far, 70 out of 140 eligible students have secured jobs, with the institute actively seeking more companies to participate before the semester concludes.

Comparing the current situation to pre-conflict times, Dr. Singh admitted a decrease in the number of participating companies and placements. However, he expressed optimism about the future, anticipating a return to offline recruitment drives by the end of the next semester.

Kh. Tomba Singh, the Registrar of NIT Manipur, highlighted the adverse impact of frequent lockdowns and curfews on the recruitment process. He emphasized that the “fear psychosis” among recruiters has further hindered placement efforts. Tomba Singh appealed to companies to recognize the institute’s location in a safe zone within Imphal and urged the public and media to contribute to a more positive image of the state.

Despite the challenges, NIT Manipur remains dedicated to facilitating placements and ensuring its students are well-prepared for the job market.
