No bridge: Assam’s Karbi Anglong villagers forced to carry patient on shoulders

Guwahati: The villagers of Assam’s Karbi Anglong district have been forced to carry patients on their shoulders to cross the river in order to reach a hospital because there isn’t a bridge or adequate road access.

According to reports, the lack of bridges and adequate road connectivity in their area is causing serious challenges for the residents of Binhup village in the Singhasan section of the hill district.

The residents of Dhansing Ronghang and Upper Deikrung are likewise having the same issues as Binhup village.

The residents of the isolated area were compelled to cross the river while carrying patients on their shoulders to go to the closest hospital, which is 18 to 20 kilometres away in the Manja area.

Locals claimed that their location lacks a bridge or sufficient road access.

Dr Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly and local MLA of Bokajan constituency of Karbi Anglong district said that the Congress dictatorship that dominated the hill area for the last seven decades is mostly to blame for this deplorable situation.

Speaking to ANI, Momin said, “Being a doctor, it saddens me deeply that throughout the Congress administration in the previous 70 years, nothing was done to promote growth. We began growth when Narendra Modi was elected prime minister in 2014 and the BJP took power in Assam in 2016. Road and bridge construction is progressing extremely quickly.”

“Seven years of our rule cannot make up for seven decades of deficit. People continue to experience misery as a result. 60–70% of the ground has been covered, but the remaining 30–40% requires development. Because of this, there aren’t many occurrences like persons crossing a river in a trolley or with patients in tow, although these incidents do occur ” he said.

He claimed that the Congress administration had utterly disregarded the Hill communities and residents of underdeveloped areas.

“This pitiful state is mostly the fault of the Congress government, which reigned for seven decades. Particularly for the hill region’s underdeveloped residents, they had no consideration for infrastructure, educational institutions, or the health sector ” Momin said.

He mentioned the development projects carried out by the BJP government, mentioning the construction of a 200-bed hospital in Haflong, a 100-bed hospital in Bokajan, and a new medical college in Diphu.

“In my seat of Bokajan, under the last BJP administration, when the Chief Minister was the Finance and PWD minister, he approved the construction of 50 bridges, which are now complete. Once again, he pledged to approve 20–30 additional bridges in my district alone. In my opinion, this issue will be solved within the next ten years, and the residents of Karbi Anglong will benefit from having well-connected places in the hill district “added Momin.
