No Construction for Kamakhya Temple Access Corridor Without IIT Guwahati Clearance: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, June 28: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that construction on the proposed Maa Kamakhya Temple Access Corridor will not commence until clearance is received from IIT Guwahati. Addressing reporters, CM Sarma emphasized the need for thorough hydrological and geological studies before any physical work begins.

“The work for the Kamakhya corridor has been awarded to Larsen & Toubro, and the plan has been submitted to IIT Guwahati for approval. I think within 2-3 months, the physical work will start only if IIT Guwahati gives clearance,” said Sarma.

Responding to public concerns about the corridor project, Sarma clarified that the project has strong local support and will be completed within two years. He reassured the public that the corridor is essentially a road and will not involve extraordinary changes, except for the addition of roof sheeting.

“People are worried about the word ‘corridor.’ Corridor is nothing but a road. People are thinking the state is going to make something extraordinary…nothing will change, only roof sheeting will be placed,” he added.

Earlier, the Assam government informed the Gauhati High Court that construction of the Kamakhya temple access corridor would not begin until IIT Guwahati granted clearance. This clearance will follow scrutiny of the project’s blueprint and mandatory hydrological and geological studies.

In an affidavit, the PWD (buildings and national highway) department stated that an MoU is being executed for IIT Guwahati to scrutinize the construction drawings. The scrutiny process by the IIT Guwahati team will include comprehensive hydrological and geological studies to ensure the project’s safety and feasibility.
