No National Holiday on Netaji’s Birthday, Says SC

Guwahati: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a petition asking for guidance on how to designate Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s birthday as a national holiday.

The argument was rejected by a bench made up of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala because the government should be making the decision.

The top court said, “The best way to celebrate his contribution is by working hard just like he worked hard for independence.”

“You are making a mockery of the PIL jurisdiction. At least think what the court can do. I am looking at the recent spate of such petitions. What will Supreme Court do? Take the jurisdiction of the court seriously. You are also a lawyer,” the court added.

Notably, lawyer KK Ramesh filed a PIL asking the court to order that January 23, the anniversary of the freedom fighter’s birth, be observed as a national holiday.
