No Nationwide Satellite-Based Tolling Implementation from May 1, Clarifies MoRTH
Guwahati, Assam– The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has today issued a clarification refuting media reports suggesting the nationwide rollout of a satellite-based toll collection system commencing May 1, 2025. The ministry explicitly stated that no such decision for immediate nationwide implementation has been undertaken.
The clarification follows widespread speculation triggered by news articles indicating an imminent shift from the current FASTag-based system to a satellite-driven tolling mechanism. MoRTH emphasized that its present focus is on introducing an ‘Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-FASTag-based barrier-less tolling system’ at select toll plazas across the country.
This upcoming system, as detailed by the ministry, will integrate ANPR technology, which captures vehicle license plates, with the already operational FASTag system that utilizes Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) for automated toll deductions. The combined approach aims to facilitate uninterrupted vehicular movement at toll plazas, thereby significantly reducing travel time for commuters.
Under this hybrid system, toll charges will be automatically levied based on vehicle identification via high-performance ANPR cameras and FASTag readers, eliminating the necessity for vehicles to halt at toll booths. The ministry further stated that in instances of non-compliance with the toll payment process, electronic notices will be issued to the concerned vehicle owners. Failure to settle these dues could lead to the suspension of the vehicle’s FASTag account and other penalties as per the VAHAN database.
