Nomination process for presidential election begins today

Guwahati: The procedure for submitting presidential nominations began on Wednesday, when the Election Commission issued a notice asking electors to fill the vacancy.

The presidential election will take place on July 18.

The nomination process began on a day when numerous opposition parties are convening in Delhi to choose a presidential candidate.

Nominations can be submitted until June 29, and the papers will be scrutinised on June 30. The deadline for withdrawing from the election has been set for July 2.

The votes will be counted on the 21st of July.

The term of incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind is schedule to end by July 24.
Members of the Electoral College which includes elected members of both houses of Parliament as well as elected members of the legislative legislatures of all states including the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry elect the president.

Members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha as well as state legislative legislatures are not eligible to be included in the electoral college and as a result are not allowed to vote in the election. Members of the legislative councils, therefore, are not eligible to vote in the presidential election.

The counting of votes takes place in the national capital while voting takes place in Parliament House and state legislative assemblies.
