North Sikkim Grapples with Landslides, Tourists Stranded as Rescue Efforts Commence

Sikkim: Torrential rainfall and devastating landslides have thrown life out of gear in North Sikkim, leaving over a thousand tourists stranded in the remote Lachen and Lachung areas.

The precarious situation has prompted an urgent advisory from Sikkim’s Travel Agents Association, acting on crucial information relayed by the North Sikkim district administration and the Chungthang Sub-Division.

In a bid to ensure the safety of those caught in the deluge, all stranded tourists have been instructed to remain in their current locations. The Chungthang–Lachung road, a vital artery for the region, has been severely disrupted, hindering immediate evacuation. However, authorities have confirmed that efforts are actively underway to restore this critical link.

Amidst the challenges, the evacuation process for tourists trapped in the Lachung area has begun. Local authorities and security personnel are working in close coordination to facilitate the safe return of those affected. Once the route between Chungthang and Lachung is cleared, plans are in place to move tourists stranded in Lachen via an alternative Donkala–Lachung route.

Recognizing the crucial role of the hospitality sector, tour operators and hoteliers have been urged to shoulder full responsibility for their guests. This includes ensuring their safety, providing adequate food and accommodation, and maintaining seamless coordination with local authorities for ongoing rescue and logistical support.

Officials on the ground, including dedicated teams from the Subdivision and North District Administration, are diligently monitoring the unfolding situation and extending all possible assistance to those impacted. A statement from the ground emphasized their active presence and commitment to providing support.

For stakeholders seeking real-time support and information, the administration has encouraged direct communication with officials stationed on-site. This proactive approach aims to streamline aid and keep everyone informed as the situation evolves.

The severity of the weather conditions had prompted the Sikkim Police Permit Cell to issue an immediate suspension of all tourist permits to North Sikkim on April 24. This precautionary measure followed massive landslides at Munshithang on the Lachen-Chungthang route and at Lema/Bob on the Lachung-Chungthang road, effectively severing access to popular tourist destinations. The police statement explicitly declared the cancellation of all previously issued permits for April 25, underscoring the administration’s commitment to prioritizing safety amidst the natural calamity.
