Northeast Chief Ministers Gather in Guwahati to Discuss Key Issues
Guwahati: Guwahati will host a crucial meeting between Home Minister Amit Shah and the chief ministers of the Northeast states. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is expected to raise concerns regarding the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in his state during the meeting.
The ILP has been a long-standing issue in Meghalaya, with CM Sangma previously expressing concerns over the potential “spill-over effect” of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state. Despite the CAA exempting Sixth Schedule areas, including most of Meghalaya, the state government has requested the implementation of ILP to restrict the entry of outsiders.
The meeting, chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah, will review the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which has replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the region. The chief ministers of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, and Sikkim will attend the meeting. However, it is unclear who will represent Manipur, which is currently under President’s rule following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh last month.
