Northeast Cities Shine as Air Quality Champions Amid Delhi’s Pollution Crisis

AIZAWL/GUWAHATI/NAGAON: Northeastern cities Aizawl, Guwahati, and Nagaon have emerged as shining examples of environmental resilience, recording remarkable air quality on Thursday, November 21, even as Delhi battles a severe pollution crisis.

Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, recorded an impressive Air Quality Index (AQI) of 32, firmly categorised as “Good.” Guwahati followed closely with an AQI of 42, while Nagaon in Assam reported a “Satisfactory” AQI of 56. These figures starkly contrast with Delhi’s hazardous conditions, where AQI levels reached critical levels of 436 in Wazirpur and 418 in Bawana, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

While Delhi grapples with toxic smog disrupting daily life and transportation—causing delayed train services and reduced visibility—these Northeastern cities breathe easy, showcasing the potential for sustainable urban living. Visuals from Delhi painted a grim picture, with joggers navigating thick smog at Kartavya Path and haze enveloping landmarks like Connaught Place and AIIMS.

The stark divide in air quality highlights the Northeast’s environmental stewardship:
• Aizawl, Mizoram: 32 AQI (Good)
• Guwahati, Assam: 42 AQI (Good)
• Nagaon, Assam: 56 AQI (Satisfactory)

As Delhi’s pollution crisis raises urgent questions about urban air quality management, Aizawl, Guwahati, and Nagaon stand out as beacons of hope. Their exemplary performance underscores the need for a nationwide shift toward greener policies and sustainable practices, offering a model for cities across India to emulate.
