Guwahati: In a landmark development for healthcare in the region, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 13 inaugurated Northeast India’s first-ever robotic surgery facility at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The launch coincided with the Bohag Bihu festivities, symbolizing a new dawn in medical innovation for the state.

The newly inaugurated facility is equipped to deliver low-cost, minimally invasive, and highly precise oncological surgeries, significantly enhancing patient care. Notably, the advanced surgical equipment used in the facility is ‘Made in India’, showcasing the nation’s growing capabilities in high-end medical technology.

Chief Minister Sarma, through his official handle on X, shared,

“Assam is beginning Bohag celebrations by dedicating North East India’s first-ever robotic surgery facility at Guwahati Medical College.”

He also announced that similar robotic surgery setups will soon be launched in Silchar and Dibrugarh, expanding access to cutting-edge treatment across the state.

In a forward-looking move to support this technological leap, CM Sarma declared that nursing colleges will be established in all cancer hospitals of Assam. These colleges will offer programs in English, Japanese, and other foreign languages, aiming to create a globally skilled medical workforce capable of operating advanced medical technology.

Emphasizing the role of robotic assistance in modern healthcare, the CM earlier tweeted,

This initiative marks a major stride towards transforming Assam into a hub for medical excellence and advanced healthcare innovation.
