Northeast States Celebrate Windfall as Central Government Releases Rs 1,78,173 Crore in Tax Devolution Funds

Assam: The central government’s recent release of tax devolution funds has provided a significant boost to India’s northeastern states, with Assam receiving an impressive Rs 5,573 crore. This allocation is part of a broader distribution of Union taxes and duties for October 2024, detailed in a state-wise breakdown.

Assam emerged as the largest beneficiary among the northeastern states, followed by Arunachal Pradesh, which received Rs 3,131 crore. Other notable allocations include Meghalaya at Rs 1,367 crore, Manipur at Rs 1,276 crore, Tripura at Rs 1,261 crore, Nagaland at Rs 1,014 crore, and Mizoram at Rs 891 crore.

The purpose of the tax devolution is to empower state governments to implement various development projects and policies effectively. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude for the advance installment, emphasizing that it would significantly contribute to realizing the vision of a developed Assam through timely policy interventions.

While the northeastern states received considerable allocations, the data indicates that Uttar Pradesh received the highest share at Rs 31,962 crore, followed by Bihar with Rs 17,921 crore. This distribution underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring balanced development across states while addressing the unique needs of the northeastern region.
