Norwegian Government Bolsters Assam’s Agriculture with Key Rice Production Project
Guwahati, August 31, 2024 — The Norwegian government has reaffirmed its dedication to Assam’s agricultural development through its continued support of a vital project designed to boost rice production in response to changing climate conditions. Launched in 2018, this initiative, in partnership with Assam Agricultural University, has made a significant impact on farmers in the Golaghat and Sivasagar districts.
Led by the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO), the Swaminathan Research Foundation, and Assam Agricultural University, the project focuses on developing hybrid rice seeds tailored to the region’s climate. In Merapani, Golaghat district, an area has been designated as a “seed village,” benefiting approximately 500 farmers from Chaudang Pathar. These farmers have reported doubling their rice yields and seeing substantial financial improvements as a result of the project.
On Friday, Norwegian Consul Andreas Benjamin Schei visited Chaudang Pathar to assess the progress of the project. Schei, accompanied by Dr. Uday Sekhar from NIBIO and several scientists from Assam Agricultural University, observed the advanced rice cultivation techniques being implemented. He expressed high praise for the project’s outcomes, acknowledging the significant strides made in enhancing rice production and improving the livelihoods of local farmers.
