Notorious Drug Trafficker Nabbed After Gunfight in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: A high-stakes confrontation in Hollongi, Arunachal Pradesh, culminated in the arrest of Rohit Basumatary, a suspect with a lengthy criminal record, as confirmed by police officials on Sunday. The arrest followed a tense exchange of gunfire, triggered by Basumatary’s attempt to evade law enforcement.

The operation, spearheaded by Capital Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh, unfolded on Saturday evening following credible intelligence regarding Basumatary’s movements. When officers signaled his vehicle to halt, Basumatary initiated a high-speed escape, leading to an intense pursuit.

During the interception, Basumatary opened fire on the pursuing officers, prompting a retaliatory response from the police team, led by SDPO Kengo Dirchi. Singh emphasized the police’s commitment to minimizing civilian risk throughout the gunfight. Two police officers sustained injuries during this operation, and Basumatary was subsequently transported to R K Mission Hospital for medical attention.

A thorough search of Basumatary’s vehicle, conducted under the observation of magistrates and independent witnesses, yielded significant evidence. Officials discovered 12 grams of suspected heroin concealed within a green soap box near the spare tire. Additionally, a sophisticated US-made firearm and six live rounds of ammunition were recovered from the vehicle, as detailed by Singh.

A formal case has been registered at Chimpu police station, and a dedicated special investigation team, led by Inspector Rina Sonam, has been formed to manage the ongoing legal proceedings. The police have issued a call for heightened public vigilance and cooperation in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking.
