Notorious Myanmar Drug Trafficker Recaptured in Mizoram After Multiple Jailbreaks

Aizawl: A notorious female drug trafficker from Myanmar, who had escaped from Mizoram’s Central Jail Aizawl and Champhai District Jail on two separate occasions, has been recaptured and handed over to the authorities.

The fugitive, identified as 44-year-old Lalchhanmawii alias C. Mawii from Khawmawi, Myanmar, was apprehended by local volunteers and turned over to Champhai Police on January 29.

Lalchhanmawii’s first escape occurred on November 30, 2023, when she and two other female inmates broke out of Central Jail Aizawl.

She had been serving a sentence under the NDPS Act for possession of 59.54 grams of heroin, following her conviction in a case registered at Sairang Police Station in March 2021.

After her initial recapture, she was transferred to Champhai District Jail on May 12, 2024, along with another escaped inmate, Lalruatsangi.

However, on December 18, 2024, she managed to escape once again, this time alongside Vansuiemi alias Suinunfeli (36), another Myanmar national.

Lalchhanmawii is a high-profile under-trial prisoner with multiple drug-related charges under the NDPS Act. Her repeated escapes had raised serious concerns among law enforcement agencies.

Her latest capture was made possible through coordinated efforts between Mizoram Police, the Excise & Narcotics Department, Sub-Headquarters YMA Champhai, and groups from Myanmar, who worked tirelessly to track and detain her.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that dangerous criminals remain in custody, emphasizing stricter security measures in jails to prevent further incidents.

Investigations are ongoing to determine how she managed to escape twice and whether any internal lapses contributed to her jailbreaks.
