Northeast Desk, August 21, 2024 – The National People’s Party (NPP) of the 17th Chizami Assembly Constituency has issued a strong statement expressing deep concerns about the worsening condition of the Pfutsero-Zhavame road, a vital inter-state link between Nagaland and Manipur. This crucial roadway also serves as the lifeline for four key villages and towns—Tsüpfüme, Razeba, Zelome, and Zhavame—but has been left in disrepair for years, with no government action in sight.
The community’s frustration dates back to 2021 when a group of youths from the Razeba area in Phek district launched a crowdfunding campaign to repair a 10-kilometer stretch of the road under the theme “My Road, My Future.” Their efforts were born out of necessity, as the road serves as the only access route for over 8,000 residents. Despite their determination, the current state of the road remains dire, causing significant hardships for all who rely on it.
The deteriorating condition of the Pfutsero-Zhavame road has had a severe impact on the local economy, particularly the agricultural sector. The area, known for its agricultural potential, has seen farmers struggling to transport their produce due to the poor road conditions. The government had declared Zhavame as a ‘Vegetable Village’ and Tsüpfüme as a ‘Ground Apple Village,’ but the inability to get crops to market has led to significant financial losses for farmers. The NPP and the community are now demanding accountability from the government, arguing that the road’s condition directly hinders their ability to earn a livelihood.
The NPP is urging the state government to take immediate action to rectify this long-standing issue, stressing that the public’s patience is wearing thin. The community is calling for justice and demanding a safe, accessible road that can withstand all weather conditions. They emphasize that the government’s neglect has gone on long enough, and they deserve a road that meets their basic needs without further delay.
