NPP Gears Up for Gambegre Bypolls, Shortlists Candidates Including Mehtab Chandee
Northeast Desk, 28th June: Following recent speculations about Mehtab Chandee, wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, emerging as a front-runner for the Gambegre bypolls, the National People’s Party (NPP) has moved swiftly to narrow down its potential candidates. On June 27, the party convened a crucial meeting where four names were shortlisted, with one set to be chosen as the official contender for the upcoming elections.
Sources within the party revealed that the decision-making process was intensive, reflecting the NPP’s determination to regain electoral ground after a disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha elections. The final candidate’s identity is expected to be disclosed next week, following careful consideration and internal consultations.
Among the contenders under scrutiny are not only Mehtab Chandee but also prominent figures like Agatha Sangma, sister of the Chief Minister, and James PK Sangma, his brother. The party, which currently holds a pivotal position in Meghalaya’s political landscape, reportedly has more than ten names on its radar for potential candidacy, indicating a robust strategy ahead of the pivotal bypolls.
With preparations in full swing, the NPP aims to consolidate its support base and present a formidable choice to Gambegre voters in the upcoming electoral contest.
