NPP Withdraws Support from BJP Government in Manipur, Cites Crisis Mismanagement

Imphal: The National People’s Party (NPP) has officially withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur, headed by Chief Minister Biren Singh.

Announcing the decision, NPP National Vice-President and former Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar cited a breakdown in trust and dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the ongoing crisis in the state.

At a press briefing, Joykumar revealed that NPP President Conrad Sangma had communicated the party’s decision to BJP President JP Nadda through an official letter. The withdrawal, he said, stemmed from the BJP’s repeated dismissal of the NPP’s recommendations to address the deteriorating law and order situation in Manipur.

“The current administration has failed to address the crisis effectively, threatening the integrity of the state,” Joykumar stated. “Despite our consistent efforts to provide constructive suggestions, the BJP government has shown little regard for them. As a result, we have lost confidence in Chief Minister Biren Singh’s leadership.”

Joykumar further criticized the government’s inadequate response to the recent abduction of three women and three children by suspected militants, highlighting it as emblematic of the administration’s broader inefficiencies.

The decision to withdraw support was reached unanimously following detailed consultations with NPP MLAs from Manipur. Joykumar confirmed that the party would formally notify Governor Anusuiya Uikey, the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, and other relevant officials about the move.

The withdrawal comes after the NPP had previously raised concerns regarding Manipur’s crisis during a national executive council meeting in May 2023, submitting a memorandum to Home Minister Amit Shah. The memorandum outlined the escalating violence and called for immediate interventions, many of which reportedly went unheeded.

As tensions rise, the NPP has reaffirmed its commitment to working towards peace and stability in the region, even as it distances itself from the Biren Singh administration.
