Om Birla Elected Speaker of 18th Lok Sabha
National Desk, 26th June: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha on June 26. His election followed motions moved in his favor by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Members of Parliament (MPs) from the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
During the parliamentary session, the Opposition had fielded K Suresh for the Speaker position. However, the final decision was taken on Wednesday due to differences between senior BJP leaders and Opposition leaders.
The Opposition had proposed a precondition that the INDIA bloc should be offered the post of Deputy Speaker in exchange for supporting Birla’s candidacy.
Home Minister Amit Shah, Shiv Sena member Prataprao Jadhav, and LJP(RV) member Chirag Paswan, among other BJP and NDA members, moved motions in Birla’s favor.
This election marked the first time since 1976 that the position of Speaker of the Lok Sabha saw a contested election.
