Opposition Leaders Back Farmers’ Protest as March to Delhi Gains Momentum

New Delhi: Farmers have begun gathering at the Shambhu border for a planned march to Delhi, demanding action on a 12-point charter that includes legal assurance for a minimum support price (MSP). Opposition leaders have expressed solidarity, urging the Central government to address farmers’ grievances.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticized the BJP-led government for allegedly ignoring the farmers’ concerns. Speaking to reporters, Gogoi said, “The government must listen to the farmers’ demands. False promises will no longer suffice.” He also took aim at BJP ministers, accusing them of prioritizing corporate interests, specifically mentioning Adani.

Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav echoed Gogoi’s sentiments, urging the government to engage in talks with the protesters. “The government should accept the farmers’ demands and hold discussions with them. These protests arise because their legitimate concerns are being neglected,” he said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi accused the BJP of being “anti-farmer” and failing to uphold its commitments. “It is unfortunate that farmers are still forced to fight for their rights. The BJP continues to ignore their pleas, and even the Vice President has rebuked the Agriculture Minister for not fulfilling promises,” Chaturvedi remarked, referencing dissatisfaction expressed by high-ranking officials.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher announced that a peaceful march of 100 farmers would head toward Delhi, demanding urgent attention to their concerns. The protesters have emphasized their resolve to press for the legal guarantee of MSP and other critical issues affecting agriculture.

Meanwhile, authorities have increased security at the Ambala-Delhi border, erecting barricades to manage the protest. Farmers are expected to depart from the Shambhu border for Delhi at 1 PM today.

The protest reflects lingering dissatisfaction over unresolved agricultural issues, despite the rollback of contentious farm laws in 2021. Opposition leaders’ statements highlight the broader political ramifications of the farmers’ movement, reinforcing its significance in India’s socio-political landscape.
