Opposition MLAs Temporarily Suspended amidst education department debate in Assam Assembly
Guwahati, 23rd February: In a tense session held at the Assam Assembly on February 23, two opposition Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) were temporarily suspended for defying the Speaker’s directives during discussions concerning alleged irregularities within the Education Department.
During a Calling Attention session, Congress Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed faced suspension as he addressed what he termed “serious irregularities” within the ‘Gunotsav’ school evaluation system. Ahmed, referring to a newspaper article, lambasted the government, alleging that a security guard had posed as a teacher in Mandia, Barpeta district.
The commotion ensued from a stormy session on February 22, where the Assembly was adjourned for ten minutes following opposition calls for an adjournment motion to address accusations of misconduct in state board examinations, including an alleged question paper leak.
Leader of the opposition, Debabrata Saikia, along with other Congress members and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi, had separately submitted notices for adjournment motions to discuss the issues. Saikia stressed concerns about last year’s class 10 exam paper leaks, prompting a CID inquiry. He urged accountability regarding corrective actions based on the CID’s findings.
Saikia also underscored ongoing issues during the current class 10 and 12 state board exams, citing instances of mislabeling question paper bundles and other errors since the commencement of the exams.
“While we are committed to allocating funds for the improvement of the department, we also demand transparency in its utilization,” Saikia emphasized.
