Opposition MPs in India Receive iPhone Warning of Possible State-Sponsored Attacks
National Desk, 31st October: Several Indian Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), including Priyanka Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena, Mahua Moitra from Trinamool Congress, and Congress members Pawan Khera and Shashi Tharoor on October 31, received a warning from Apple on their iPhones, cautioning that ‘state-sponsored attackers may be targeting’ their devices.
The message alerted them to the potential targeting by state-sponsored attackers, which could compromise their iPhones remotely. Apple mentioned in the message, “While it’s possible this is a false alarm, please take this warning seriously.”
Shashi Tharoor confirmed the authenticity of the message he received. He expressed his thoughts on Twitter, stating that he was glad to keep underemployed officials busy. Priyanka Chaturvedi and Mahua Moitra also shared the messages they received, expressing their opinions on the matter.
Apple’s support document from August 2023 describes these threat notifications as designed to assist users who may have been targeted by state-sponsored attackers. These users are singled out because of their identity or activities. State-sponsored attackers dedicate significant resources to target a small number of individuals, making their attacks challenging to detect and prevent.
