Opposition MPs Walk Out from Rajya Sabha Over Demands on Manipur Violence Debate

National Desk, August 2nd: Members of the opposition INDIA bloc walked out of Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, citing discontent with their requests for a discussion on Manipur violence to be Rule 267 and a statement from PM Narendra Modi.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar stated that the debate on Manipur violence under Rule 176 will not be time-limited. “There is no time limit for discussion on the Manipur situation under Rule 176,” he said, assuring the parties that they will have adequate opportunity to convey their positions.

Despite the fact that 60 notices were received under Rule 267 for a discussion on Manipur violence, the Chairman had already communicated his judgment.

Regarding the opposition’s demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence in the House during the debate on Manipur, the Chairman clarified that he cannot issue a directive in this regard. “Directive from the chair cannot be issued. I can’t give that directive. I shall not,” he stated.

Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that he had given notice for discussion under Rule 267, and other opposition MPs also stressed their demands.

However, Chairman Dhankhar pointed out that the opportunity provided to the Leader of the Opposition “was not wholesomely utilized.”

In response to the government’s stance on their demand, the Congress and other opposition parties staged a walkout, reiterating their concerns, which have been raised since the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 20.
