Opposition Parties in Assam Seek Audience with PM Modi Over CAA Concerns

Guwahati, 5th March: Opposition parties in Assam, represented by state Congress chief Bhupen Borah, have sought an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming visit to the state. The purpose of the meeting is to apprise the Prime Minister of the perceived risks associated with the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA.

In a letter addressed to PM Modi, Borah, who also heads the United Opposition Forum of Assam (UOFA), highlighted concerns regarding the potential threat the CAA poses to the cultural, historical, socio-economic, and identity aspects of the Assamese people. The letter emphasized the significance of the historic Assam Accord of 1985 and expressed fears that the CAA could nullify its provisions.

The UOFA considers it imperative to inform the Prime Minister about the volatile situation expected to arise in Assam in the near future due to the CAA. The opposition parties have requested an early appointment with PM Modi during his visit to the state on March 8-9.

The letter referenced past protests against the CAA in Assam, which resulted in casualties and injuries. It reiterated the UOFA’s stance on organizing a statewide bandh and protests if the CAA is not repealed.

Meanwhile, various organizations, including the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 30 other groups, have announced plans for protests during PM Modi’s visit. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged those opposing the CAA to seek redressal through legal channels rather than resorting to agitations.

The CAA aims to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who entered India before December 31, 2014. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stated that the rules for implementing the CAA will be notified and enforced before the Lok Sabha polls.
