Opposition Releases Chargesheet Against Assam Chief Minister Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections
Guwahati, 20th March: As the Lok Sabha elections approach, Opposition parties have launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his government, unveiling a 40-page chargesheet outlining a myriad of issues allegedly plaguing Sarma’s administration.
The chargesheet accuses the Chief Minister and his government of a range of allegations, including corruption, failure to address the human-elephant conflict, rising prices, syndicates, scams, illegal immigration, rampant toll taxes, and more. The opposition alleges that these issues highlight a pattern of governance failure and ineffective policy implementation under Sarma’s leadership.
Some of the key accusations leveled by the Opposition include:
- Land scam involving the CM’s family
- Alleged receipt of a Rs 10 crore Central subsidy by the CM’s wife
- Acquisition of 18 acres of land by companies owned by the CM’s wife
- Grabbing of tribal land and allocation to private companies
- Failure to tackle the human-elephant conflict
- Syndicates involved in toll gates, cattle smuggling, and coal mining
- Alleged corruption in various government schemes and projects
- Failure to implement Assam Accord and provide ST status to six communities
- Economic mismanagement leading to a hike in fuel prices and electricity bills
- Alleged favoritism towards select contractors and businesses
- Exploitation of public resources for personal gain by the CM’s family and associates
The Opposition has accused Sarma and his administration of prioritizing their own interests over those of the people of Assam, engaging in unethical practices and land grabbing. They allege that the government has failed to address critical issues affecting the state’s economy, environment, and social fabric.
While many of these allegations remain unverified or disputed by the Chief Minister and his family, the Opposition maintains that Sarma’s government has reached the pinnacle of corruption and mismanagement, posing a severe threat to democratic values and the welfare of the people of Assam.
In response, the Chief Minister and his administration have refuted the allegations, highlighting the state’s economic growth and development initiatives undertaken under his leadership. However, the chargesheet underscores the deep-seated concerns regarding governance and accountability in Assam, setting the stage for a contentious election campaign in the state.
