Opposition Slams Assam Beef Ban as ‘Political Gimmick’, BJP Defends Move
Guwahati: The Assam government’s recent announcement to ban public consumption of beef has sparked a political firestorm, with the Opposition vehemently criticizing the move as a “political gimmick” aimed at polarizing the electorate.
Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar argued that the government has no right to dictate people’s food habits, calling it an attack on freedom of expression and religious beliefs. He emphasized that food choices are influenced by various factors, including climate, geography, and religious beliefs.
Raijor Dal general secretary Rasel Hussain questioned the government’s priorities, suggesting that it was more concerned with divisive issues like beef politics than addressing pressing concerns such as price rise and the implementation of the Assam Accord.
Opposition parties also raised concerns about the potential for corruption and black market activities related to beef, alleging that the ban could benefit certain vested interests.
The BJP, however, defended the decision, stating that it would help preserve cattle and promote religious harmony. The party asserted that the move aligns with the aspirations of the people of Assam and respects the sentiments of all communities.
