Opposition Walks Out of Lok Sabha Over JPC Report on Waqf Bill
Guwahati: The Opposition staged a dramatic walkout from the Lok Sabha on February 13 after the tabling of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on the Waqf Bill, alleging inadequate time for review and procedural lapses in the deliberation process.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi led the protest, criticizing the hurried proceedings. “We were given just one night to read a 655-page report. There was hardly any opportunity to present our objections,” he stated, highlighting concerns over the lack of thorough scrutiny. He further pointed out that the JPC failed to follow standard protocols. “If you check the minutes of the meetings, you will see that there was no clause-by-clause discussion, which is a fundamental aspect of any JPC review. This crucial process was bypassed,” he alleged.
Gogoi also raised questions about the conduct of the JPC chairman, asking, “Under whose influence is the chairman acting?” He justified the Opposition’s walkout as a necessary protest against what he described as a flawed and undemocratic review process.
The walkout underscores rising tensions in Parliament over legislative scrutiny, with the Opposition demanding greater transparency and time for meaningful debate on key bills.
