Orange Alert Issued for Eastern Meghalaya Districts

Shillong— The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for Wednesday, forecasting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across three eastern districts of Meghalaya – East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills.

Residents are urged to brace for intense spells of rain, which significantly heighten the risk of landslides, flash floods, and road blockages, particularly in areas already deemed vulnerable.

The IMD further indicates that the heavy rainfall spell is likely to persist into Thursday, for which a yellow alert has been issued for parts of the state. An orange alert signifies the necessity for heightened preparedness and caution due to potentially disruptive weather conditions.

Authorities are strongly advising the public to remain vigilant and to avoid any non-essential travel during periods of severe downpour. Officials have underscored the critical importance of public cooperation in mitigating potential risks and ensuring overall safety amidst the challenging weather conditions.
