Orchid’s New Bloom: Sikkim’s Kumar Yonzon Honoured by UK’s Royal Horticultural Society

Gangtok: In a proud moment for Sikkim and a testament to his dedication, a new hybrid variety of Cymbidium orchid has been officially named ‘Cymbidium Kumar Yonzon’ by the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) of the United Kingdom. This honour, a first of its kind for a Sikkimese conservationist, recognises the relentless efforts of Kumar Yonzon, president of the Green Zone Society, in the field of environmental conservation and biodiversity management.

The RHS, which serves as the International Cultivar Registration Authority for Orchid Hybrids, maintains meticulous records of new plant hybrids and cultivars globally. The inclusion of ‘Cymbidium Kumar Yonzon’ in their registry not only immortalises his name but also formally links this new orchid variety to the world’s horticultural records.

A cross between two magnificent species, Cymbidium Magic Kiwi and Cymbidium Joan’s Charisma, the new hybrid has already made its grand debut. It was a featured attraction at the recent Indian Orchid Festival 2025, which was held at the ICAR-National Research Centre for Orchids (NRCO) in Pakyong, Sikkim.

Hailing from Tashithang Kartok, Chalamthang Pacheykhani in Sikkim’s Pakyong district, Kumar Yonzon has been a leading figure in various conservation and awareness programmes across the region. His work has been instrumental in safeguarding the rich biodiversity of Sikkim, earning him this well-deserved international recognition. The naming of the orchid follows a successful and rigorous registration process with the RHS, cementing his legacy in both conservation and horticulture.
