Over 200 Fall Ill After Consuming Snacks at Memorial Ceremony in Assam’s Golaghat

Guwahati: A troubling incident in Assam’s Golaghat district left over 200 people ill after consuming traditional snacks during a memorial ceremony on Saturday night.

The event, held in Pasghoria village, Uriamghat area, turned distressing as guests reported symptoms including stomach aches, headaches, vomiting, and diarrhea after eating ‘jalpan,’ a local snack made with puffed rice and cream.

Health officials acted swiftly, admitting 53 individuals to local health centers for treatment. Among these, two cases were serious enough to necessitate transfers to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital for advanced care.

Fortunately, the majority of those affected are now reported to be in stable condition. While some have already been discharged, approximately 150 individuals with milder symptoms are being closely monitored at home.

In response to the outbreak, Sarupathar’s BJP MLA, Biswajit Phukan, visited the affected individuals in the hospital to assess the situation firsthand.

He announced that the district administration would be sending a food inspector to investigate the cause of the foodborne illness. To further assist the community, a medical camp has been established in the village, offering health check-ups and support for the residents.

As investigations begin, local authorities are urging the community to remain vigilant regarding food safety practices to prevent similar incidents in the future.
