Over 200 Pigs Die Of African Swine Fever in Assam’s Sivasagar
Guwahati: African Swine Fever (ASF) continues to wreak havoc on piggeries in Sivasagar district of Assam as 200 pigs have died due to the highly contagious pig disease, district animal husbandry official said on Sunday.
The official informed that the Dehing Kalghar village and Jalukonibari village in the district have been worst affected.
As many as 200 pigs died of the disease in the two regions alone, officials informed.
Meanwhile, the district administration’s animal husbandry division has suggested culling affected pigs in an effort to stem the spread of the disease.
It may be noted that the virus infects domestic pigs and causes a hemorrhagic fever with a high fatality rate.
Some viral isolates can kill animals within a week after infection. It persistently infects its natural hosts like warthogs and bushpigs.
However, the disease is different from Swine Flu and it does not cause any problems in humans.
