Over 2,900 Mizoram Households Apply for Rooftop Solar Panels Under PM-SGMBY
Aizawl: In a move to boost sustainable energy practices, more than 2,900 households in Mizoram have registered for rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY).
Announcing this at a press conference on Wednesday, Mizoram’s Power and Electricity Minister, F. Rodingliana, revealed that a total of 2,990 households had applied for the scheme by December 5, with 554 applications already approved.
Highlighting the progress, Rodingliana stated that the state has completed 54 installations, generating a cumulative capacity of 0.19 megawatts. To support early adopters, the government has disbursed subsidies exceeding ₹19 lakh to 23 households, ensuring financial incentives for participants in the program.
Launched in February 2024, the PM-SGMBY scheme is a nationwide initiative targeting the installation of rooftop solar panels on 1 crore homes by 2027. Designed to provide free electricity and encourage renewable energy adoption, the scheme offers substantial subsidies from both central and state governments to make solar energy more accessible to the public.
In Mizoram, households can install solar panels ranging from 1 kW to 10 kW, with subsidies between ₹45,000 and ₹1.65 lakh based on system capacity. The state government has allocated ₹4 crore to subsidize the program, ensuring its seamless implementation. Additionally, 12 empaneled vendors have been authorized to carry out installations across the state.
Rodingliana expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to reduce dependency on conventional power sources while empowering residents with cost-effective energy solutions. The scheme has been widely appreciated for its promise of a cleaner, greener future for Mizoram.
