Over 800 Myanmar Refugees Sought Shelter in Mizoram’s Champhai

Guwahati: In recent days, around 800 refugees from Myanmar are said to have entered Mizoram’s Champhai area, fleeing their harsh civil war and the military government’s aerial bombing of civilian populations.

Leaders of the local Village-Level Committees on Myanmar Refugees (VLCMR) confirmed on Tuesday.

According to officials, 820 migrants have arrived in their village while 30 more Chin refugees from Myanmar have sought safety in Vaphai village.

There are currently 1,812 refugees from Halkha town, Thantlang town, Tlangpui, Farkawn and Tlanglo villages in Myanmar living in Farkawn village alone.

According to reports, the escalating civil unrest in Chin state between the Tatmadaw, the Burmese army, ethnic rebel groups and the local civilian resistance force is the main reason for the latest influx.

Chin Defence Force (CDF), a local civilian militia and members of militant organisations regularly ambush Tatmadaw patrols, prompting the Myanmar army to retaliate with artillery and aircraft bombardment on villages.

As a result, several people have been forced to leave their cities and villages.

The Hniarlawnthar village in Halkha town, the seat of the Chin state saw the destruction of 40 homes on Saturday and forcing many residents to leave.

Since the military took control of the country in February 2021, Mizoram has already taken in almost 31,000 Myanmar refugees.
