Owner and Coordinator of Delhi Coaching Centre Arrested Following Student Deaths in Flooded Basement
Guwahati, July 28, 2024 — In a tragic incident, the owner and coordinator of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi, have been arrested after the deaths of three students in the flooded basement of their coaching center. The city has responded with swift measures.
The victims, Tania Soni (25) from Telangana, Shreya Yadav (25) from Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar, and Nevin Dalwin (28) from Kerala’s Ernakulam, were found early Sunday morning. Their deaths have sparked urgent safety concerns.
Deputy Commissioner of Police M Harsha Vardhan announced the filing of an FIR at Rajinder Nagar Police Station. The charges include sections 105 (culpable homicide), 106(1) (death due to rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 290 (negligent conduct regarding construction), and 35 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “The owner and coordinator of the coaching centre have been detained,” Vardhan confirmed.
Reacting to the incident, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi ordered immediate actions against all basement-operating coaching centers for violating building bye-laws. She has also initiated an inquiry to identify any Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officers responsible. “These coaching centres are not following the norms and pose severe risks,” Mayor Oberoi emphasized.
The incident has highlighted the need for stringent enforcement of building regulations and safety measures in educational institutions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
