Pakistan Offers Probe Assistance Amidst Pahalgam Tragedy; Warns India on Water Treaty

National: In the aftermath of the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated his nation’s willingness to participate in a “neutral and transparent” investigation into the incident.

Speaking at the Pakistan Military Academy’s passing-out parade in Kakul, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Sharif addressed the recurring pattern of blame, stating, “The recent tragedy in Pahalgam is yet another example of this perpetual blame game, which must come to a grinding halt. Continuing with its role as a responsible country, Pakistan is open to participating in any neutral, transparent and credible investigation.”

The Prime Minister’s address also focused on the contentious issue of the Indus Water Treaty, which India is reportedly considering suspending. Sharif issued a stern warning, declaring that any attempt by India to impede, diminish, or reroute Pakistan’s allocated water supply would be met with an unwavering and forceful response. “Water is our lifeline and a vital national interest, and its availability will be safeguarded at all costs and under all circumstances,” he asserted, emphasizing the nation’s resolve to protect its water resources. He further stated that Pakistan would use all available options if India were to stop the flow of water allocated to Pakistan.

Sharif underscored the unity of the Pakistani nation and its armed forces in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Our valiant armed forces are capable and remain fully prepared to defend the country’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity against any misadventure,” he stated, highlighting the military’s dedication and preparedness. “Our armed forces are a symbol of valour, exemplary discipline and unwavering commitment to the nation.” He also made it clear that while Pakistan prefers peace, this preference should not be mistaken for weakness. “Peace is our preference but must not be construed as our weakness,” the prime minister said, adding that “we will never compromise on our dignity and security of the country”.

Addressing the issue of terrorism, Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering stance against all forms of terrorism. “Pakistan has always condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he stated, highlighting the immense sacrifices made by the nation. “We have endured immense loss of over 90,000 casualties and economic losses exceeding USD 600 billion,” he said, adding that there cannot be a more powerful manifestation of “our commitment that we will not tolerate any kind of terrorism of any hue and colour”. He expressed regret over India’s continued practice of levelling baseless accusations without proper investigation or evidence. “He regretted that India continued the pattern of exploitation, levelling baseless allegations and false accusations without a credible investigation or verifiable evidence.”

Sharif also reiterated Pakistan’s stance on the Kashmir issue, quoting Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s description of Kashmir as Pakistan’s “jugular vein.” He emphasized that the “globally recognised dispute remained unresolved despite UN resolutions.” He concluded by affirming Pakistan’s continued support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. “Pakistan shall continue to support the right of self-determination of the Kashmiri people till they achieve their rights through their great struggle and sacrifices,” the prime minister said.
