Panchayat Secretary Arrested in Assam on Embezzlement Charges

Guwahati, 3rd September: In a significant crackdown against corruption in Assam, reports have emerged of the arrest of the Panchayat Secretary in Cachar district on charges of embezzling government funds.

The arrested official has been identified as Amitabh Nath, who served as the secretary of both Bhagabazar Gaon Panchayat and Saptagram Gaon Panchayat.

Amitabh Nath’s arrest was carried out by the Cachar Police following a complaint filed by the Chief Executive Officer of Cachar District Council, Ranjit Kumar Laskar.

The allegations against Nath involve the misappropriation of government funds, amounting to approximately 11 lakhs under the 14th Finance Commission, during his tenure as the Secretary of Tarapur Gaon Panchayat. He has also been charged with irregularities in record-keeping.

In response to these allegations, the Cachar District Council initiated a thorough departmental-level investigation, which substantiated the accusations against Nath. Consequently, an FIR was filed, leading to his arrest on Friday.

This incident underscores the commitment of authorities in Assam to combat corruption and ensure accountability in the use of public funds.
