Pandit Birju Maharaj passes away at 83

Guwahati: Pandit Birju Maharaj breathed his last on January 17 at the age of 83 in Delhi.

It was the end of an era with the maestro’s death since Pandit Birju Maharaj not only defined a kind of dance, but he also put the lovely art on the map of the world. Pandit Birju Maharaj’s contributions to dance are still unrivaled, and he is affectionately regarded as ‘Maharaj ji’ by his pupils.

Maharaj Ji was raised by his uncles, Lachhu Maharaj and Shambhu Maharaj, at the home of Kathak exponent Jagannath Maharaj, also known as Acchan Maharaj of Lucknow Gharana. He was a gifted Hindustani classical vocalist and drummer who presented his first presentation at the age of seven.

The Prime Minister,  Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the passing away of legendary Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj. The Prime Minister has also said that his passing is an irreparable loss to the entire art world.
