Parliament Poised for Heated ‘Operation Sindoor’ Debate Today

New Delhi: India’s Parliament is set to witness a high-voltage special discussion on ‘Operation Sindoor’ starting Monday, July 28, in the Lok Sabha. The decisive military response followed the horrific April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which brutally claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians. A day later, on Tuesday, July 29, the Rajya Sabha will also take up the crucial matter.

The official List of Business confirms a “Special Discussion on India’s strong, successful and decisive ‘Operation Sindoor’,” which entailed precision strikes on terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) in retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam incident. A marathon 16-hour debate is anticipated across both Houses.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to initiate the discussion in the Lok Sabha. Other prominent figures from the government, including Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, along with BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey, are slated to participate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to intervene during the Lok Sabha debate today and might address the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. His intervention comes amidst persistent demands from the Opposition for a direct response from the Prime Minister, particularly concerning President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack.

The Opposition bloc, under the banner of the INDIA alliance, is gearing up for a critical engagement. Samajwadi Party leaders Akhilesh Yadav and MP Rajiv Rai will represent their party, while the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), allocated 30 minutes, will have MPs Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi presenting their views.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju affirmed the schedule, stating that all parties have been apprised that the ‘Operation Sindoor’ discussion will take precedence over other issues, such as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. “All issues cannot be taken up at once. The priority is to debate India’s response to terrorism,” he stated unequivocally.

The upcoming debate follows a turbulent inaugural week of the Monsoon Session, which saw the unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and several procedural disruptions. Floor leaders of the INDIA bloc are scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. today to finalise their joint strategy for the pivotal second week, with ‘Operation Sindoor’ topping their agenda.
