Petroleum Crisis Looms Over Guwahati as Mazdoor Union Calls 48-Hour Strike from Jan 5

Guwahati, 4th Jan: In response to recent amendments imposing severe penalties on drivers involved in accidents, the North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union, affiliated with AITUC, has declared a 48-hour boycott of loading and unloading activities for petroleum products.

The decision was made during a Joint Platform meeting of Motor Sramik Union of Assam in Guwahati on January 2, 2024.

Expressing vehement opposition to the amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act, union members raised concerns about the harsh penalties and demanded the withdrawal of the Act.

Munin Mahanta, the President of the North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union, emphasized the need for better security measures for drivers.

In a formal communication to key petroleum authorities, including Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., and Hindusthan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., the union requested understanding and urged against pressuring for loading and unloading during the specified 48-hour period starting from 5 AM on January 5, 2024.

The work stoppage is expected to impact loading and unloading operations at petroleum oil depots, loading locations, and LPG bottling plants across the state.
