PM Modi Praises Assam’s ‘Hathibandhu’ Initiative in ‘Mann Ki Baat’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address on January 19, commended Assam’s innovative ‘Hathibandhu’ initiative for addressing the persistent issue of human-elephant conflicts in the state. Highlighting its success, he described it as a natural and effective solution that benefits both communities and wildlife.

The ‘Hathibandhu’ initiative has focused on planting Napier grass across 30 hectares of private land in Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts. This measure provides elephants with a sustainable food source, significantly reducing incidents of crop destruction by herds of elephants.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s recognition, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his gratitude via his official X handle. Sarma noted that the initiative has positively impacted around 8,000 people in the region, creating a harmonious balance between human livelihoods and wildlife conservation. “This plantation ensures elephants have a ready food source and has helped in the reduction of crop raiding. It’s a win-win situation for both people and elephants,” the Chief Minister wrote.

During his address, PM Modi emphasized the deep connection between humans and animals, sharing stories that showcased their mutual loyalty. Speaking about Nagaon, he highlighted the district’s rich heritage as the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev and its challenges due to frequent man-elephant conflicts.

PM Modi further elaborated on the efforts of local farmers and villagers, who took the initiative to reclaim about 800 bighas of barren land to plant Napier grass. This grassroots effort, he noted, has significantly mitigated tensions while ensuring a sustainable solution for elephants.

The Prime Minister’s acknowledgment has drawn national attention to the ‘Hathibandhu’ project, inspiring other regions to adopt similar innovative and inclusive approaches to resolve human-wildlife conflicts.
