PM Modi Resigns as Lok Sabha Dissolves Ahead of New Government Formation
National Desk, 5th June: In a pivotal political development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday to tender his resignation along with the Council of Ministers. President Murmu accepted the resignation and requested that PM Modi and his Council continue in their roles until the new government is formed.
Earlier in the day, the Union cabinet recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha, with the current term set to end on June 16. This move follows the recent Lok Sabha elections where the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a majority.
The elections saw a notable performance by the Congress, part of the opposition INDIA alliance, which increased its seat count to 99 from 52 in 2019. This improvement was particularly evident in Rajasthan and Haryana, where Congress gains chipped away at the BJP’s share.
Despite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 240 seats, falling short of an absolute majority, the NDA alliance comfortably crossed the 272-seat threshold needed to form the government.
Both the NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc are set to hold crucial meetings with their alliance partners later today to discuss the election outcomes and strategize for the formation of the new government.
