PM Modi Welcomes Supreme Court’s Verdict Upholding Article 370 Abrogation
National Desk, 11th December: Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the Centre’s decision to revoke the special status (Article 370) for Jammu and Kashmir. He expressed that the judgment signifies hope, progress, and unity for the people in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Supreme Court of India affirmed the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This decision validates the government’s actions on August 5th, 2019, when Article 370 was nullified, reshaping the region’s autonomy and governance.
Initially established as a temporary provision during wartime conditions, Article 370 allowed Jammu and Kashmir to have its constitution and restricted the applicability of the Indian Constitution within the state.
On October 31st, 2019, the region transitioned into a union territory, with Srinagar and Jammu as capitals in different months. The Supreme Court’s ruling followed extensive deliberations, with the judgment reserved on September 5th after 16 days of arguments.
Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, B.R. Gavai, and Surya Kant, determined that the President of India had the authority to deactivate Article 370, even after the dissolution of the Jammu and Kashmir Constituent Assembly, which ceased to exist after adopting the state’s constitution on January 26th, 1957.
