PM Modi’s Love for Assamese Gamosa Shines at International Events

Guwahati, 21st June: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently took to social media platform X to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s steadfast admiration for the traditional Assamese Gamosa. During the national-level celebrations of Yoga Day in Kashmir, Sarma highlighted Modi’s consistent choice to sport the Gamosa on significant national and international occasions.

“Adarniya Shri Narendra Modi ji’s love for our Assamese Gamusa is unparalleled; carrying it with finesse on important occasions,” Sarma tweeted, expressing admiration for the Prime Minister’s cultural gesture.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal echoed Sarma’s sentiments, emphasizing the spiritual significance of the Gamosa within Assam’s cultural tapestry. “On behalf of the people of Assam and the devotees of Krishnaguru Sevashram, I express my deep gratitude to PM Modi for showing his affection for the Gamosa,” Sonowal stated.

Modi’s affinity for the Gamosa has been a recurring theme during his international engagements. Last year, during International Yoga Day at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Modi set a Guinness World Record for participating in a mass yoga session. His attire, complete with an Assamese Gamosa, became a notable highlight of the event, showcasing India’s cultural diversity on a global platform.

Throughout his tenure, Modi has consistently chosen Gamosas made by local artisans from Assam, thereby supporting their craftsmanship and promoting Assamese culture worldwide. His visits to Assam, totaling 27 during his tenure, underscore his commitment to amplifying the state’s rich cultural heritage.

The Assamese Gamosa, characterized by its handwoven cotton fabric adorned with crimson or maroon stripes and intricate motifs, holds deep cultural significance. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Gamosa symbolizes hospitality, kindness, and respect in Assamese traditions, often used in social, cultural, and religious ceremonies.

PM Modi’s endorsement of the Gamosa not only honors Assam’s traditions but also elevates its stature as a symbol of India’s northeast region. His consistent embrace of this cultural emblem reflects his dedication to promoting and preserving India’s diverse cultural heritage on the global stage.
