PM Modi’s Union Cabinet Approves Universal Health Coverage for Senior Citizens Aged 70 and Above

National Desk, 12th September: In a landmark decision, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) scheme to provide comprehensive health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their income or socio-economic status.

This move aims to benefit approximately 4.5 crore families, comprising six crore senior citizens, with a free health insurance cover of ₹5 lakh per year on a family basis. Eligible senior citizens will receive a new distinct card under AB PM-JAY, enabling them to access quality healthcare services without financial burdens.

The scheme’s expansion builds upon its existing success, having already covered 7.37 crore hospital admissions, including 49% women beneficiaries, with benefits exceeding ₹1 lakh crore. This decision reinforces the government’s commitment to ensuring universal health coverage for all citizens, particularly vulnerable populations like senior citizens.
