PM Narendra Modi To Attend 400th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Lachit Barphukan
Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the closing ceremony of the 400th birth anniversary celebrations of Ahom general Lachit Barphukan in New Delhi.
This was informed by the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Lachit Barphukan led the Ahom kingdom’s army with distinction. He is renowned for his leadership during the 1671 “Battle of Saraighat” on the Brahmaputra which prevented the strong Mughal troops under the command of Raja Ramsingh-I from successfully retaking Assam.
CM Sarma in a news conference announced that from November 23 to 25, the state government will commemorate the anniversary in the nation’s capital with a number of events that will be attended by numerous luminaries from various fields.
“The first day will start with the inauguration of an exhibition at Vigyan Bhawan by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. It will be followed by a panel discussion on the Ahom kingdom,” he added.
Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju will launch a cultural event with a patriotic theme in the evening on November 23.
“Another panel discussion on Assam’s overlooked history will take place in the morning of the second day. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, would address in a plenary session in the afternoon “announced CM Sarma.
The Prime Minister will attend the closing session as the chief guest and give a speech in the morning of the final day, Sarma said.
The 400th anniversary of Lachit Borphukan’s birth was celebrated in February and former President Ram Nath Kovind also lay the groundwork for a 150-foot bronze statue of the renowned general to be built at his memorial site on more than 16.5 acres in Hollongapar, close to Teok.
As part of the expanded programme, Nitin Gokhale a defence expert will give a talk at the National Defence Academy in Pune on November 26. Sarma said, the best cadet will be recognised after the talktalk.
