Police detain Two Journalists covering Tripura Communal Clashes

Guwahati: Two journalists from a digital news outlet were detained by the police in Assam’s Karimganj district over allegations that they had misreported the recent communal clashes and had maligned the image of the government in Tripura. The scribes were arrested based on an FIR by a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) supporter as per their employer.

The journalists, both women, while speaking to the local media said that they were from Delhi and had come to Tripura for reporting. The were detained in Karimganj district’s Nilam Bazar which is quite close to Assam-Tripura border.

Both the journalists were identified as Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha who are working with the HW News Network. They have been named in an FIR at the Fatikroy Police Station.

They were arrested while they were on the way to Silchar airport.

Sakunia after being detained wrote on her Twitter, “We have been detained at the Nilambazar police station, Karimganj, Assam. We were informed by the officer-in-charge of Nilambazar PS that SP of Gomti District gave the orders for our detention.”
