Police Encounter and Major Cattle Smuggling Bust in Assam

Guwahati, 18th July: In a dramatic turn of events on the night of July 17, a police encounter occurred at West Gaikhowa on the India-Bangladesh border in Golakganj. The Golakganj police, having arrested the most wanted cow smuggler, Sirajul Haque, earlier in the day, faced a violent escape attempt from Haque during a late-night operation.

As the police brought Sirajul Haque to West Gaikhowa, he attacked the officers and tried to flee. In the ensuing gunfire, Haque was injured. The incident underscores the ongoing struggle against illegal cattle smuggling operations in the region.

On the same night, a significant police operation in Dhubri led to the seizure of a vehicle loaded with smuggled cattle at Chagolia on the Assam-Bengal border. Acting on a tip-off, Chagolia police intercepted the vehicle transporting 46 cattle from Bihar to Dhubri via Bengal.

Four smugglers, Shahidul Islam and Akhtar Hussain from Barpeta Road, Samad Ali from Barpeta Town, and Mozammil Hussain from Nalbari, were arrested during the operation. The police also seized an ultra truck bearing the number AS-28-AC-0508 used in the smuggling.

These incidents highlight the ongoing efforts by Assam police to combat cattle smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border, reflecting a broader crackdown on illegal activities in the region.
