Police nab mother for strangling five-month-old in Tripura to elope with lover

Agartala; A pall of gloom has descended on the quiet village of Rampadapara in Tripura’s Sepahijala district following the arrest of a woman accused of murdering her five-month-old child.

The shocking incident, which unfolded on Sunday, has left the community in disbelief as police revealed the motive behind the heinous crime: the mother allegedly killed her infant to be with a man she was having an extramarital affair with.

Suchitra Debbarma, 28, was arrested after a police team from Sonamura police station, led by officer-in-charge Tapas Das, rushed to her home following a tip-off from concerned neighbours. On reaching the house, police found the baby lying motionless on a bed while Suchitra was nowhere to be found. The infant was immediately taken to Sonamura sub-divisional hospital, but doctors pronounced the baby dead on arrival.

Further investigations led to Suchitra’s arrest from the same village. According to Das, preliminary findings suggest that Suchitra strangled her child to death while her husband, Amit Debbarma, was away at work on a rubber plantation. During intense interrogation, Suchitra reportedly confessed to the crime, admitting that she wanted to get rid of the baby to elope with her lover, a man she had been in a relationship with for over a year. A post-mortem examination is currently underway to ascertain the exact cause of death. The incident has sent shockwaves across the state, sparking outrage and disbelief among local residents.
